Gabriola Matters

GABRIOLA MATTERS has a two-pronged mission:

  • to bring Gabriolans’ sustainability concerns to decision-makers;
  • to discover where and how decisions are made about the things that matter to is, and to “de-mystify” this process to Gabriolans.

Actions

  • Feb-2026 — a letter to government officials, expressing SG support for a Snuneymuxw press release decrying inaction on spills and toxic pollution into Gabriola waters.

Background

GABRIOLA MATTERS was launched at a Sustainable Gabriola meeting in early 2025.

It was noted that, while attendees brought up significant sustainability concerns at almost every SusGabe meeting, there was no way to actually bring those concerns to those in power, even when there is a clear path of action. Being a loose information-exchange hub, rather than a formal organization, SusGabe has no mandate to take a public position, and no way to “vote” on issues among the 200-plus “members” on its email list.

The best we could do is agree among attendees at a monthly meeting that some action should be taken about a given issue. So it was proposed to create a “Gabriola Matters” spin-off, specifically tasked with taking these acknowledged issues of local sustainability (environmental, social, economic or otherwise) both to the public and to the powers-that-be.

Four of us in this spin-off are building the initiative. Look for our information and call-to-action posts in coming months, under the “Gabriola Matters” banner. If you want to join us, get in touch!
